Sudan Horizon – Nazik Shammam

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Dr. Ammar Al-Sheikh, announced that meat exports to several Arab countries have begun to resume.

Al-Sheikh revealed that two tonnes of meat had been exported to Kuwait, while requests had been received to resume and expand exports to include the markets of Bahrain, Qatar, and other countries, subject to meeting the required conditions.

In an exclusive statement to Sudan Horizon on Tuesday, the undersecretary confirmed that the ministry had made significant progress in efforts to rehabilitate and upgrade several slaughterhouses in accordance with international standards, with the aim of strengthening the country’s export capacity.

He explained that export activity was continuing to improve, noting that slaughterhouses such as Gedaref and Al-Shaheen were now largely equipped to meet the export requirements of various countries.

The undersecretary also announced the formation of a specialized higher committee to rehabilitate slaughterhouses and industrial facilities associated with the livestock sector, including meat and dairy factories. The initiative aims to improve product quality and ensure compliance with internationally recognized standards.

In a related development, Al-Sheikh said joint fisheries projects were being implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to support fishermen in the Red Sea, River Nile, and Northern states by providing fishing equipment and boats.

He added that work was underway to rehabilitate aquaculture farms in Khartoum and other areas to increase production in the coming period.
