Great Lakes Organization Delegates visit Khartoum to Assess War Impact

The Ministry of Minerals and the General Authority for Geological Research received a delegation from the Great Lakes Organization, headed by the organization’s Financial Director, Ham Mungyereza, and several other members. The visit aimed to assess the war’s impact on government institutions related to the economic sector and to discuss Sudan’s outstanding financial obligations to the organization.
Omar Othman, Director of the General Administration of Mineral Resources at the General Authority for Geological Research and the official responsible for the GROE file, explained that the delegation began its visit by meeting with the Minister of Minerals. The Minister welcomed the delegation and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation with the GROE, praising its role in supporting Sudan and enhancing regional partnerships in areas of mutual interest.
He added that the delegation then held a meeting with the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Minerals, where they received a comprehensive briefing on the Ministry’s performance during the war and the efforts made to ensure the continuity of work in the mining sector. The briefing also reviewed the extent of the damage inflicted on infrastructure, workplaces, and equipment as a result of the events that the country witnessed. Documentary materials and videos were also presented, reflecting the scale of the destruction to the Ministry’s facilities.
Omar Osman revealed that the visit also came within the framework of discussing a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Finance to consider exempting Sudan from some of its outstanding financial obligations to the Great Lakes Region, based on the exceptional circumstances imposed by the war and the resulting widespread damage to infrastructure and state institutions.
He noted that the delegation paid a visit to the new headquarters of the General Authority for Geological Research, where they toured the Geological Museum and viewed mineral and rock samples that exemplify the geological diversity and natural resources that Sudan possesses. They also were debriefed on the scientific and documentary role played by the museum. In the same context, the delegation then proceeded to the Authority’s historic headquarters on Nile Street, where they witnessed firsthand the extent of the damage inflicted on buildings, laboratories, and technical facilities. They also observed the direct impact of the war on the Authority’s infrastructure and its repercussions on geological and technical activities.
The head of the delegation, Ham Mungyereza expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Minerals and the General Authority for Geological Research for the warm welcome and cooperation the delegation received during the visit. He affirmed the Great Lakes Organization’s continued support for Sudan and its assistance in various joint forums and programs. He emphasized that the visit achieved its objectives of assessing the situation on the ground at the targeted institutions and evaluating the extent of the war’s impact on the minerals sector, thus contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the current situation and the challenges facing national institutions.
