Minister of Interior in Geneva: Politicising Developmental Work is Counterproductive as it Complicates the Situation

Geneva – Sudanhorizon
On Tuesday, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Khalil Basha Sayreen, Sudan’s Minister of Interior, addressed a high-level side event at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The event focused on the regional refugee crisis in Sudan and neighbouring countries under the theme of “Developmental Investments to Enhance Response.” It was organised alongside the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Program meetings.
The minister emphasised the critical role that development agencies play in addressing the severe humanitarian crisis affecting the Sudanese people. He explained that the burden of hosting such large numbers falls on the already struggling host communities, which are facing their own fragile economic conditions and critical living situations. However, he also highlighted the potential positive impact of investment in improving infrastructure in agriculture, livestock, education, health, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.
This investment aims to enhance self-reliance and sustainability for displaced and refugees, and it promises a brighter future.
The minister also urged the European Union and governments that have imposed sanctions on Sudan and frozen development aid to reconsider these policies. He stressed the importance of this reconsideration, noting that these policies primarily harm the Sudanese people. He emphasised that politicising developmental aid is counterproductive and will only further complicate an already complex situation. He warned that if conditions remain unchanged, the 10 million displaced people will be forced to seek refuge or migrate elsewhere. The need for policy change is clear, and it is urgent.
