Sudan Quintet Representatives to Arrive in Khartoum Tomorrow for Direct Political Consultations

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

Representatives of the Quintet group concerned with Sudan will begin a visit to Khartoum tomorrow, Tuesday, to hold consultations with Sudanese parties.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Quintet—which comprises representatives of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Arab League, the European Union, and the United Nations—said it would visit Sudan from September 8 to 10 as part of its ongoing efforts to engage with relevant Sudanese stakeholders and conduct direct political consultations on the ground.

“During the visit, the Quintet will hear assessments of the current situation and exchange views on the work it has undertaken so far,” the statement said.

In recent months, the Quintet has engaged with relevant Sudanese political and civil actors with the aim of establishing an inclusive political process leading to a democratic civilian government.

On Sunday, Osman Mirghani, spokesperson for the National Dialogue Preparatory Committee, said the committee would hold an important meeting with the Quintet during the week.

He said the upcoming meeting forms part of efforts to engage with regional and international communities and present the committee’s vision for preparing the Sudanese dialogue, as well as discuss ways to coordinate joint efforts to support an inclusive political process.

Mirghani noted that the anticipated Sudanese dialogue seeks to achieve broad national understandings by involving various political and societal forces without exclusion.

The Quintet reaffirmed in its statement that it is closely coordinating with the Quad, comprising the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as other international partners, to help advance a coherent and viable political process toward peace in Sudan.
