Quintet Mechanism Preparing to Invite Sudanese Political Forces to New Dialogue Round in Addis Ababa in Late July

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Mousa

The Quintet Mechanism—comprising the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), the League of Arab States, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the European Union (EU)—is preparing to invite Sudanese political groups to participate in a new round of dialogue scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from July 27 to 29.

Sources close to the Quintet Mechanism told Sudanhorizon that consultations are still underway between the mechanism and Sudanese political actors to finalize the meeting dates and arrangements for issuing invitations.

According to the sources, the list of invitees will be based on participation in the previous Berlin consultations and will include the Somoud (Resilience) coalition and the Coordination of National Forces.

The sources added that the Democratic Bloc had boycotted the Berlin meetings and noted that disagreements persist among its constituent groups over whether to participate in the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue sponsored by the Quintet Mechanism.

They also pointed to differences between some political actors and the Quintet Mechanism regarding invitations extended to groups operating under various categories, including independents, youth, women, and academics.

According to the sources, some parties believe these groups serve as affiliates or representatives of the Somoud coalition and the Ta’sees (Foundation) alliance, prompting objections to their participation in the talks.

The sources further indicated that the upcoming meetings are expected to produce an agreement on the framework for managing the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, drawing on proposals and recommendations submitted by participating political groups to the Quintet Mechanism during the previous meeting held in Addis Ababa.
