Haavisto Leaves Egypt Following Consultations on Neighboring Countries’ Role in Advancing Sudan Peace Efforts

Pekka Haavisto, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, has concluded a two-day visit to Egypt, following a recent visit to Sudan.
During the daily press briefing, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that Haavisto met with high-level Egyptian officials in Cairo, including Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. These discussions provided a valuable opportunity to exchange views on the vital role played by Sudan’s neighboring countries in advancing peace efforts.
Dujarric added that the discussions reaffirmed the strong cooperation between the members of the Quartet and the Quintet committees, as well as their shared readiness to continue working together to help end the conflict in Sudan.
The Quintet committee comprises the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, and the European Union, while the Quartet committee includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.
Haavisto also met with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy; the meeting emphasized the importance of continued close coordination and cooperation between the UN and the League in their peace-building efforts within the framework of the Quintet group.
The UN spokesperson noted that the Personal Envoy also engaged with members of the Sudanese community in Cairo to hear their views on the situation in their country, stressing the importance of ensuring that diverse diaspora communities have an active voice in shaping Sudan’s future.
