Denmark’s Mission to the UNSC : We Fully Support the Quintet’s Efforts to Advance an Inclusive, Sudanese-Led Political Process

The UN Security Council held an informal interactive dialogue on Sudan on Monday. The session was convened at the request of Denmark’s Permanent Mission to the UN—in its capacity as an elected Council member—and co-hosted with the United Kingdom’s mission. Participants included the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, the European Union, and the United Nations.

In a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Danish mission affirmed that Denmark fully supports the efforts of the Quintet aimed at advancing an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process, taking urgent measures to protect civilians, ensuring humanitarian access, de-escalating tensions, and achieving a permanent ceasefire.

For his part, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of IGAD, noted after the meeting that while Sudan’s future belongs solely to the Sudanese people, the international community would consider how it might contribute to shaping that future within a context of peace.

Writing on his official X account today (Tuesday), Workneh stated that during his address to the Security Council meeting on Sudan (Monday), he called for “unified and coordinated diplomacy, unhindered humanitarian access, and strong support for an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process that safeguards Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.”

For her part, the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, expressed her pleasure at returning to New York to brief the UN Security Council on the latest developments regarding Sudan. She stated she was honoured alongside her four colleagues in the Quintet to review their joint efforts concerning Sudan and to outline the European Union’s next steps

Weber had previously shared details of her visit to Khartoum, noting that she held “constructive talks with the Transitional Sovereign Council and civilians.”

She expressed her anticipation of returning to build upon the progress achieved and continuing close cooperation with their partners in the Quintet.

It is worth noting that members of the UN Security Council held an informal interactive dialogue on Monday regarding the situation in Sudan, titled “From Principles to Practice: Translating International Mediation Commitments into a Coherent, Civilian-Led Path to Peace.” This initiative was led by Denmark and the United Kingdom—the latter being responsible for drafting Security Council resolutions and statements concerning Sudan.
