The New Zealand Council for International Development (CID), in collaboration with World Vision New Zealand and the Development Studies Program at Victoria University of Wellington, organized a panel of discussion entitled “What Can Small States Do in the Face of Major Humanitarian Crises?” The discussion focused on the humanitarian situation in Sudan and ways to support peace efforts and humanitarian relief.
Participating in the panel was Ahmed Salah Bayoumi, Chargé d’Affaires of the Sudanese Embassy in Australia, who reviewed the developments in Sudan. He explained that the current humanitarian crisis resulted from the rebellion led by the Rapid Support Forces militia against the state and its institutions, leading to widespread human suffering, the displacement of millions of citizens, and the destruction of infrastructure and basic services.
The Chargé d’Affaires affirmed the Sudanese government’s commitment to facilitating humanitarian access and protecting civilians. He also highlighted the measures taken by the government to open and extend border crossings and humanitarian corridors in cooperation with the United Nations and international and regional humanitarian organizations.
He also highlighted the Comprehensive Peace Initiative launched by Sudanese Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris, as a national framework aimed at ending the war and achieving sustainable peace through inclusive national dialogue, national reconciliation, and reconstruction, thus fulfilling the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, stability, and development.
The Sudanese diplomat commended the role of the Sudanese community in New Zealand in raising awareness of national issues and supporting humanitarian efforts. He also expressed his appreciation for the interest shown by New Zealand institutions in organizing such events, which contribute to enhancing international understanding of the challenges facing Sudan.
The symposium saw the participation of a number of academics and those interested in humanitarian affairs, with discussions addressing the importance of international solidarity and the role of small states in supporting relief efforts and humanitarian response in complex crises.
