Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem, and the Governor of Khartoum, along with a number of United Nations officials, attended on Thursday the reopening of the United Nations headquarters (UN House) in the capital, Khartoum, as well as the office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in preparation for the resumption of operations from Khartoum following the return of normalcy.
The Foreign Minister praised the step, describing it as a historic moment that does not occur often. He said, “Through this event, we send a message to our partners in the United Nations that we are working side by side with them for the stability of Sudan.”
Salem affirmed that Darfur and Kordofan will return from what he described as “abduction” by the Rapid Support Forces militia, adding, “We are advocates of peace, and as members of the United Nations, we are joining hands with UN agencies and organizations to implement the Government of Hope peace initiative in order to achieve sustainable peace.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation also called on youth to organize themselves and take the lead in national initiatives to rebuild their country, rather than waiting for political parties and alliances in the aftermath of the devastating war.
Salem stated that the government calls for peace and welcomes all international initiatives aimed at achieving it. He added, “Through the United Nations, we send the message that there is no place for militias among us, and we also reject external dictates.”
He urged the African Union to review what he described as the unjust decision to continue suspending Sudan’s membership and called on it to correct this position. He also called for more positive steps from IGAD to support stability in Sudan.
The minister praised the efforts of UN organizations in the country, particularly the work of the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, highlighting her dedication. He also commended the presence of the Ambassador of Zimbabwe at the reopening, noting that he was the only African ambassador who did not leave the country throughout the war.
