Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

Minister of Energy Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed has outlined the key features of a new policy framework aimed at rehabilitating and developing Sudan’s electricity sector, which has suffered extensive damage to power generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure.

During a visit to the Sudan Electricity Company on Monday, the minister emphasized the ongoing efforts and coordinated activities within the electricity sector to support reconstruction and create a suitable environment for voluntary return.

The minister reviewed the broad plan for increasing electricity production through hydropower generation by raising dam storage capacities and rehabilitating transformers, as well as returning some thermal power stations to service. He noted that these measures have already contributed to increased electricity generation, alongside an expansion of solar energy projects.

He also affirmed the continuation of work to rehabilitate the transmission network and restore its substations, announcing that several facilities have already resumed operations, including the Al-Hasahisa and Soba substations.

The minister added that Sudan has reached understandings and cooperation agreements in the electricity sector with Russia, Belarus, Turkey, and Egypt. These areas of cooperation include transformer manufacturing and related equipment, increasing hydropower generation, and strengthening electricity interconnection projects.

He further reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to improving services provided to citizens by enhancing the mechanisms used by the Electricity Distribution Company to deliver services to the public and address the negative effects of unauthorized electrical connections.

The minister also directed authorities to take citizens’ circumstances into consideration while addressing issues related to electricity connections and metering services.
