Malaria and Dengue Cases Recede in Khartoum State
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The Khartoum State Ministry of Health announced a significant drop in malaria and dengue fever cases following large-scale campaigns launched in the first half of April in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, Al-Nahla Petroleum Company, Al-Mustaqbal Development Company, and the National Council for Civil Defense.
During his address to the “Malaria and Dengue-Free Capital” initiative in Khartoum locality on Sunday, in the presence of the locality’s Executive Director, Abdul-Moneim Al-Bashir, Dr. Mohamed Hassan, Director of the Ministry’s Preventive Medicine Department, highlighted the effectiveness of previous campaigns in combating the disease vectors in their larval stages through spraying, fogging, and house-to-house inspections. This resulted in a decrease in cases to 1,115 malaria cases and only 67 dengue fever cases in the tenth week, confirming the trend towards zero cases in the coming days and the declaration of the capital as malaria and dengue-free through continued intensive vector eradication campaigns.
The Sudan News Agency quoted the Executive Director of Khartoum Locality as confirming the effectiveness of the recently launched vector control campaigns, which have positively resulted in decline in malaria and dengue fever cases in recent weeks in areas with fragile health systems.
He asserted that these efforts, undertaken in collaboration with disease control partners, encourage the voluntary return of citizens to the capital. He emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to continue these campaigns, particularly with the approach of autumn, which presents a favorable environment for vector breeding if left unchecked.
The Executive Director noted that the locality had made significant progress in environmental sanitation following the liberation of Khartoum through intensive cleaning campaigns, the removal of weeds and organic waste, and the repair of water leaks that provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. He commended the role of the Ministries of Health at both the federal and state levels, as well as the companies and organizations supporting the campaign, in creating a suitable environment for citizens to return to Khartoum.
It is noted that the campaign began with the participation of more than 20 vehicles equipped with modern fogging machines and with the assistance of more than 800 inspectors, health observers, workers and support staff under the supervision of the General Administration of the Health System in the locality and targets all neighborhoods of Khartoum.
