The Undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Justice and Head of the National Human Rights Mechanism, Justice Mawlana Howaida Ali Awad Al-Karim, met Thursday in her office in Port Sudan with the Deputy Country Director of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Fareed Hamdan, to discuss ways of coordination and cooperation between the national mechanism and the UN office.
The Deputy Minister of Justice, acting in the capacity of the Minister, emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and coordination between the National Human Rights Mechanism and international mechanisms.
According to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the meeting comes “as part of the joint coordination between the UN Country Office and the National Human Rights Mechanism.”
The agency reported that the meeting included a proposal to organize a roundtable to deliberate on how Sudan can fulfill its contractual and non-contractual obligations in the context of promoting and enhancing human rights. This would reflect cooperation with international human rights mechanisms such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), treaty bodies, and special procedures of the United Nations.
After the meeting, Mawlana Howaida reaffirmed the commitment to cooperation between the National Human Rights Mechanism and the UN Country Office, especially as conditions in the country stabilize sufficiently to allow renewed engagement.
