Sudan Electricity Sector Discusses Damage Assessment and Reconstruction Strategy

A workshop on developing a strategic vision for the reconstruction and development of Sudan’s electricity sector was held in Khartoum on Tuesday under the patronage of Minister of Energy Engineer and Adviser Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed, with the participation of sector leaders, experts, and relevant stakeholders.
The workshop aimed to develop an integrated vision for recovery and reconstruction and formulate future plans that address the challenges facing the sector while supporting the sustainability and development of electricity services across the country.
The opening session was addressed by Engineer Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, Director General of Sudan Electricity Holding Company, who stressed the importance of producing a clear strategic vision and practical, implementable plans. He said the workshop’s recommendations would receive immediate attention and implementation, contributing to shaping the future of the electricity sector and placing it on a path toward recovery and development.
The workshop reviewed the extensive damage and major losses suffered by electricity-sector infrastructure as a result of the targeting and systematic destruction that affected the sector during the war. The damage severely impacted generation, transmission, and distribution facilities and included the looting and destruction of transformers, equipment, and facilities; the destruction of transmission lines and networks; and attacks on telecommunications networks. It also covered damage caused by drone attacks on a number of facilities by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia, directly affecting the sector’s operational capacity and the stability of electricity supplies.
Participants discussed a number of strategic priorities for the recovery and reconstruction phase, including assessing war-related damage and losses, developing recovery and reconstruction strategies, addressing technical and commercial losses, rehabilitating and upgrading transmission and distribution networks, accelerating the integration of renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing sustainability.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of creating an attractive legal and investment environment, unifying strategic visions, identifying short-, medium-, and long-term priorities, and establishing clear performance, monitoring, and evaluation indicators. Other priorities included strengthening occupational safety, health, and environmental standards; assessing the condition of damaged sites and facilities; building sector capacity and operational efficiency; and establishing and developing training centers to qualify human resources for the requirements of the reconstruction and development phase.
Participants stressed that the scale of the challenges facing Sudan’s electricity sector requires concerted efforts and coordinated visions among all relevant parties. They called for the workshop’s outcomes to be translated into clear programs and projects aimed at rehabilitating damaged infrastructure, restoring operational capacity, and improving the efficiency and sustainability of electricity supplies in support of reconstruction and development efforts in Sudan.
