Governor of CBS Calls on the International Community to Assist War-Affected Countries
Washington – Sudanhorizon
The Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan (CBS), Amina Mirghani, has acknowledged that her country’s economy has been affected by the ongoing three-year war and the US-Iran war, which has exacerbated the economic crisis affecting all countries in the region.
She pinpointed that this has led to a sharp rise in the prices of strategic commodities in general, and petroleum products in particular, in addition to increased transportation and insurance costs.
During her participation in the annual meeting of the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, with finance ministers and central bank governors from Middle Eastern and North African countries on Wednesday evening in Washington, the Sudan CBS Governor called on the international community to play its role in providing technical and financial support to countries affected by wars, including those impacted by the current war in the Gulf region, with a specific allocation of technical and financial support for Sudan.
The Governor of the Bank of Sudan stressed the need for the IMF and its institutions to cooperate with the Sudanese economic authorities in providing the necessary technical and financial support to overcome these crises.
She also referred to the need to resume Article IV consultations with the IMF authorities, in addition to continuing debt relief efforts within the framework of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative. Debt relief efforts, which were halted during the past period, have resumed.
The governor explained that the war of April 15, 2023, which has now entered its third year, has had negative repercussions on the overall economic performance of the country, leading to a decline in all economic indicators and a decrease in the country’s gross national product due to the shutdown of most economic sectors and the stagnation of their productive activity.
She stated that the Sudanese government has made considerable efforts to restore economic stability and provide the minimum necessities of life for its citizens. She emphasized that the significant success achieved by the country in this area was based on local resources and the dedicated efforts of those in charge of the state, without any support or assistance from the International Monetary Fund and its institutions.
