Diplomatic Source to “Sudanhorizon”: British Envoy Crowder’s Visit to Sudan is a Significant Step Forward

A senior diplomatic source expressed hope that the recent visit by Richard Crowder, Head of the British Office and Special Representative to Sudan, would mark the beginning of a genuine and positive British engagement with Sudan.

In an exclusive statement to the Sudanhorizon news outlet, the source noted that Britain considers itself the “penholder” for Sudan at the UN Security Council, and its historical ties with Sudan impose a responsibility to engage constructively with the country.

However, the official pointed out that Britain had long engaged with Sudan from afar and indirectly, adding that Crowder’s visit was the first by a British envoy since the outbreak of the war.

The source highlighted that Crowder’s meetings during the visit were marked by frank and open discussions, which are expected to lead to a deeper understanding. The official criticized Britain’s recent engagement, which had been limited to a very narrow group of Sudanese political forces and conducted through multilateral forums such as Geneva and New York, often involving pre-drafted resolutions presented to Sudan’s delegation.

The diplomat commended Sudan’s embassy in London’s efforts in maintaining communication with the British government. He described Crowder’s visit to Port Sudan, where he met with senior officials, including the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, his deputy, council members, and the foreign minister, as a significant step forward.

Sudanese officials reportedly encouraged Crowder to engage directly with all segments of Sudanese society rather than relying solely on the government’s perspective to gain an accurate understanding of public sentiment. The source concluded by saying, “We hope this visit will pave the way for further constructive engagement.”

It is noteworthy that during his three-day visit, Crowder met with senior Sudanese officials, who expressed Sudan’s willingness to engage positively with Britain. They emphasized the need for the UK to classify the militia as a terrorist group responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
