Arab Agriculture Organization: Plan to Rehabilitate Sudanese Agricultural Sector

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Mohamed Nour Abdel-Daim, has revealed the drafting of a plan to rehabilitate Sudan’s agricultural sector in cooperation with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and several other relevant entities.

Abdel-Daim discussed the rehabilitation of national agricultural projects with a delegation from the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, led by Professor Ibrahim Adam Ahmed Al-Dukhairi, the organization’s Director-General, and Mahdi Abdel-Karim Abdel-Rahman, the director of the organization’s Port Sudan office, at his office on Monday.

The Minister of State confirmed that the organization is working on a draft plan to rehabilitate Sudan’s agricultural sector in partnership with the Ministries of Finance, Agriculture, and Animal Resources, as well as other relevant bodies. The aim is to rehabilitate national agricultural projects, including the Al-Suki, Al-Rahad, White Nile, and Northern projects, to increase production of maize, wheat, cotton, sesame, and other high-value crops such as rice, potatoes, and soybeans.

He explained that Sudan possesses agricultural land that qualifies it to undertake food security projects at the regional and international levels, noting that the ministry is working to secure the necessary funding for the project’s implementation.

For his part, the Director General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, Professor Ibrahim Al-Dukhairi, indicated that the organization has begun drafting this proposal, in addition to conducting the necessary studies to rehabilitate national agricultural projects.

He explained that the organization conducted a study and applied it to existing projects, such as the New Halfa Agricultural Corporation project, where the yield per feddan more than doubled from 8 sacks to 18 sacks of maize last year, while reducing costs and increasing productivity thanks to the use of agricultural machinery and modern technologies. He stated that the organization is ready to provide the necessary studies and technical support.

Last August, the Ministry of Finance launched evaluating national agricultural projects and then developed a preliminary plan with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development.
