Electrical Interconnection Capacity Between Egypt and Sudan Increased to 75 Megawatts

Minister of Energy Al-Mutasim Ibrahim Ahmed announced that discussions with the Egyptian side regarding cooperation in the electricity and energy sector have yielded positive results concerning the expansion of electrical interconnection.
The Minister confirmed that the electrical capacity currently exported from Egypt to Sudan has risen to 75 megawatts, following an agreement to increase it from 50 to 80 megawatts. He noted that this increase would help meet the needs of the agricultural season in the Northern State and support the residential sector.
The two sides agreed to accelerate the completion of the second phase of the interconnection project—raising capacity to 300 megawatts and eventually to 1,000 megawatts—as well as to cooperate on rehabilitating grids, power generation plants, and transformers damaged incurred recently.
The discussions—which involved the Governor of the Northern State and the Director of the Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company, and were attended by Ambassador Hani Salah, Assistant Foreign Minister for Sudan and South Sudan Affairs—also covered the training and capacity-building of Sudanese work teams and cooperation on solar and wind energy projects.
For his part, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, affirmed his country’s continued support for Sudan and its readiness to provide the expertise, equipment, and training necessary to help rebuild and rehabilitate the electricity sector, emphasizing the deep historical ties between the two countries and their brotherly peoples.
The Minister of Energy expressed appreciation for Egypt’s stance, confirming that the results of the discussions would bolster efforts to stabilize the electricity supply and rehabilitate Sudan’s energy sector infrastructure.
