Agar to the Quintet: The Quintet Must Halt the War Before Discussing Any Political Process

Malik Agar Air, Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, has emphasized that priority for the Quintet mechanism at this stage is to halt the war before discussing any political process. He stressed that ending the war must begin by engaging the UAE, given its role as the primary supporter of the insurgency.
During a meeting in Khartoum on Thursday with the Quintet delegation, Agar stated that efforts should currently focus on supporting Sudanese initiatives to find a political solution that ends the war.
Agar noted Sudan’s long history of political agreements hosted by African nations and backed by international sponsors, pointing out that none of these agreements resolved the Sudanese crisis because they focused solely on power-sharing without addressing the root causes of the crisis.
The Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council indicated that the visit by the delegation—comprising representatives from the UN, the African Union,League of Arab States, IGAD, and the European Union—aimed to present their perspective on how to contribute positively to ending the war in Sudan.
For its part, the Quintet delegation affirmed its readiness to facilitate the work of the Sudanese political consultation committee, while pledging not to interfere in its agenda or the conduct and future of the political dialogue.
The delegation members also expressed their satisfaction at seeing life return to normal in the capital, Khartoum, emphasizing that this visit marks a fresh start for their work.
The delegation explained that they are in constant contact with various Sudanese political factions that are currently unwilling to sit together, with the aim of unifying Sudanese efforts to bring the war to an end.
