To All Mining Companies: Comply or Get Revoked

Cairo – Nazik Shamam

The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company has announced that it is taking new measures to revoke the licenses of any mining company that fails to implement its contract with the Sudanese government.

The company’s General Manager, Mohamed Tahir Omar, has revealed during a brainstorming meeting in Cairo, Egypt, on the sidelines of his participation in the Fourth Mining Forum, which concluded sessions on Wednesday, that the company will begin using the GIs system to monitor mining activity in the country as of the last quarter of the current fiscal year.

He explained that the number of traditional miners has increased to four million after the war, as most people have lost their businesses and capitals.

Omar indicated that the most prominent challenges facing the company are smuggling and encroachment by traditional miners on concession areas, stressing his commitment to transforming traditional mining into organized mining.

Regarding gold exports to the UAE, Omar stated that gold is not state-owned and belongs to the private sector, which exercises its right to export gold to any destination it deems appropriate.

He explained that the company was able to export 52% of the gold produced last year, revealing that plans are being implemented to curb smuggling.

For his part, the company’s Director of Environment and Safety, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Rahim Salama, conditioned the use of cyanide in mining on compliance with the required requirements. He stated that cyanide is used globally in mining and is not limited to Sudan alone.
