US Justice Department Issues Subpoenas Summoning Five Journalists Who Reported on Security Flaws in Trump’s Plane

The US Justice Department has issued subpoenas to several journalists from The New York Times after they published reports revealing that the new presidential plane, a gift from Qatar, lacked advanced defense systems.
According to the newspaper, the five journalists who co-authored and published these reports are: Tyler Beagar, Eric Lipton, Adam Goldman, Eric Schmitt, and Julian E. Barnes.
Through these subpoenas, the Justice Department seeks to compel the journalists to testify and provide the materials in their possession, with the aim of identifying and prosecuting those responsible for leaking this sensitive security information.
The journalists revealed in their reports published in The New York Times that the new presidential plane (a Boeing 747-8), which Trump received as a gift from Qatar, lacks the standard missile defense system and anti-heat-seeking defenses available on the older Air Force One model.
This security breach, coinciding with heightened security tensions and Iranian threats while President Donald Trump was in Ankara for the NATO summit, prompted the Secret Service to intervene and force the president to return using the older presidential plane as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, The New York Times condemned the legal notices, some of which were delivered by federal agents to journalists’ homes. The newspaper’s legal counsel, David McCraw, described the action as “outrageous” and a threat to press freedom and the public’s right to know.
