Sudan Bans Trade and Use of Agricultural Pesticides of Unknown Origin

The National Pesticides Council has banned the trade or use of any agricultural pesticides of unknown origin, including those repackaged outside official channels.

The council stressed the importance of securing all suspicious quantities and subjecting them to laboratory testing, following the seizure of large quantities suspected of having been looted from warehouses belonging to companies, agricultural projects, and the General Administration of Plant Protection in war-affected states.

The decision came during an emergency meeting attended by all council members, with the participation of the Economic Security authorities, the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization, and Customs. The meeting aimed to protect the agricultural sector, public health, and food security from the risks of contamination, poisoning, or chemical degradation resulting from unauthorized repackaging.

The meeting decided to establish emergency technical committees in the states where suspicious quantities were identified to determine the locations and quantities of the seized pesticides and document their storage conditions.

It also ordered the full seizure of unidentified shipments and the collection of certified samples to analyze the concentration of active ingredients and determine whether they comply with established specifications.

The council warned that strict measures would be taken against those involved in looting, repackaging, or illegally selling pesticides. It also banned the use or sale of any product whose source and technical and operational information cannot be verified.

The council warned farmers and producers against purchasing or using repackaged or unknown-origin pesticides, even if they are offered at lower prices. It stressed that tampering with chemical components could lead to crop failure, contamination of soil and water, and serious health and economic damage.

The council called on all citizens and traders to immediately report any suspicious activities or unauthorized warehouses to help protect the country’s agricultural resources and food security.
