Diplomatic Sources: Donors’ Meeting on Sudan in Washington, February
Sudanhorizon – Special Report – Mariam Abasher
High-ranking diplomatic sources have revealed that the United States is currently undertaking intensive contacts to convene a meeting on the humanitarian situation in Sudan, early coming February, at a time when the spokesperson for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)and Refugees has described the humanitarian conditions in refugee camps as catastrophic.
According to the sources who spoke to Sudanhorizon news website on Wednesday, the coordination and arrangements for the meeting are being handled between the United States and the United Nations, and the meeting will be limited to donors only.
The sources indicated that the purpose of the meeting with relevant organizations and countries is to increase funding for humanitarian aid in Sudan, and that the meeting is scheduled for February 3rd and will be held in Washington, D.C. The sources stressed Sudan is not part of the meeting, confirming that it will be exclusively for donors.
On the other hand, Adam Rijal, spokesperson for displaced persons and refugees in Darfur, described the situation of refugees in all camps and shelters as “very bad” in a statement to Sudanhorizon website on Wednesday. He added that the influx of refugees continues to increase amid shortage of humanitarian aid and medicine.
The Darfur Refugee and Displaced Persons Affairs Coordination Office recently issued an appeal declaring that the camps for displaced persons and refugees are facing a complete humanitarian collapse, and that hundreds of thousands are living in inhumane conditions that are deteriorating daily, due to a dangerous decline in the volume of humanitarian aid and its complete inability to meet even the most basic needs.
