Joint Forces Spokesman: Capture of Umm Sayala Cuts Militia Supply Route, Defections Hasten Victory

The official spokesman for the Joint Forces, Mutawakkil Ali Wakil, said the Joint Forces, in full coordination with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), achieved a major victory on Saturday in the Umm Sayala area of North Kordofan State.

In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, Wakil said the operation resulted in the killing of at least 38 members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), including a number of foreign mercenaries. He added that 21 militia combat vehicles were destroyed, while 17 additional vehicles, along with their weapons and ammunition, were captured.

Wakil said the victory followed a series of large-scale, high-quality operations carried out by the Joint Forces along the North Kordofan front, which, he said, succeeded in clearing the area of remaining militia elements. He described the operation as evidence of the determination of the Joint Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces to continue what he called the campaign to defeat the aggression until every part of the country’s territory is liberated.

“Our advance will continue, and victory will remain on the side of the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Joint Forces, and the supporting forces,” he said.

Wakil explained that Umm Sayala holds significant strategic importance because it lies along key supply routes linking North Kordofan with the Darfur states, making it a vital logistical corridor for transporting fuel, military equipment, and supplies between militia strongholds.

He added that the area’s rugged terrain provides natural defensive cover, making control of the location a valuable military advantage for securing the rear positions of the forces holding it.

He further described Umm Sayala as a gateway for military operations, saying that securing the area opens the way for expanding military advances toward other parts of western Sudan while limiting the militia’s ability to manoeuvre and regroup.

Wakil also noted that Umm Sayala has economic and social importance as a pastoral and agricultural area. He said bringing it under government control would secure its resources for the state while protecting civilians from extortion and forced recruitment.

“What has been achieved was not merely a routine military engagement,” he said. “It was a strategic blow that shifted the balance of power on the country’s western front.”

In a related development, Wakil said the recent defection of a large RSF force, together with its full complement of equipment, and its surrender to the Sudanese Armed Forces played a highly significant role in achieving the victory.

He explained that the defectors helped expose the militia’s defensive lines and provided the Joint Forces with precise intelligence on RSF positions and vulnerabilities in the Umm Sayala area.

According to Wakil, the defections demonstrated that the militia’s morale had already collapsed before the battle began, boosting the confidence of the Joint Forces while contributing to the flight or surrender of many remaining RSF fighters.

“We were not waiting for them to surrender,” he said. “But when they came of their own accord, we turned them from instruments of war into a strategic asset in our planning. This has always been our policy: anyone who lays down his weapon and chooses the الوطن is welcome; whoever continues fighting will face death or capture.”
