Tehran – Sudanhorizon – Maryam Abshir
Sudanese Foreign Minister Dr. Ali Youssef is set to meet with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian during his ongoing visit to Tehran.
During the meeting, the minister is expected to brief President Pezeshkian on the latest developments in Sudan, particularly in light of the ongoing war. The discussion will also cover bilateral relations and efforts to revitalize ties following the resumption of diplomatic relations and the reopening of embassies in both countries.
Signing of Political and Visa Agreements
On Monday evening, the foreign ministers of Sudan and Iran signed an agreement to establish a joint political committee. The committee’s inaugural meetings began with:
A bilateral discussion between the two foreign ministers,
A broader meeting involving delegations from both countries.
Foreign Minister Ali Youssef stated that:
The joint committee will meet twice a year, alternating between the capitals of both countries.
An additional agreement was signed to facilitate visa issuance for diplomatic and official passport holders, aiming to ease travel for official delegations.
A joint ministerial trade committee meeting is also planned for May, with teams assigned to prepare the agenda and logistical arrangements.
Iran’s Role in Sudan’s Reconstruction
Minister Youssef highlighted a major agreement for active Iranian participation in the upcoming trade committee meeting. He emphasised that Iranian private and public companies will play a key role in Sudan’s post-war reconstruction, leveraging Iran’s expertise in infrastructure development.
Furthermore, he noted that Sudan and Iran share a common stance on key regional and international issues.
Sudan-Iran Cooperation on Regional Affairs
During discussions with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister Youssef provided an update on the situation in Sudan, stating:
“The militia is operating under foreign agendas aimed at systematically destroying Sudan. However, the war is nearing its end, with the Sudanese Armed Forces regaining control over areas previously seized by the militia. The Sudanese people have borne the heaviest cost of this war, suffering immense losses in both lives and property—one of the worst violations in modern warfare.”
Regarding the Palestinian issue, both sides discussed Sudan’s:
Participation in an upcoming Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Tehran,
Involvement in the upcoming Arab League summit,
Firm opposition to any plans to forcibly displace the Palestinian people.
The visit underscores a growing partnership between Sudan and Iran, with both nations aligning on diplomatic, economic, and regional matters.
