The UN Security Council will hold a specialized and open session on Sudan next Monday. The session will be chaired by the Danish Foreign Minister, whose country holds the Council presidency for August. The US President’s Advisor on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, will participate, representing the United States. The session will discuss developments in Sudan and efforts to contain the crisis in its various dimensions, according to the Council’s website.
In a related context, informed sources told Sudanhorizon that it is likely that the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, will lead the Sudanese delegation participating in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which will begin its activities on September 8. The UN has not yet definitively announced the list of heads of state and government participating in the meetings or the dates of their speeches.
According to sources, Sudanese authorities, primarily the Presidency, the Council of Ministers, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, began holding meetings and consultations early on to ensure the Sudanese delegation’s participation in the UN General Assembly session at all levels. This preparation involved specialized committees and coordination with relevant countries and stakeholders.
It is expected that issues such as Sudan, along with Palestine, the Middle East, Ukraine, humanitarian crises, food security, debt and development in Africa, and migration, will feature prominently in the speeches of the leaders.
It is worth noting that the 81st session of the UN General Assembly will officially commence on September 8th at the UN headquarters in New York at the level of permanent representatives.
The general and high-level debates, in which heads of state and government and foreign ministers will participate and deliver their speeches, will begin on September 22nd and continue until September 26th.
