ICRC:Flights from Jeddah to Enhance Humanitarian Access to Sudan
Jeddah – Sudanhorizon
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has begun operating its humanitarian flight from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to facilitate the rapid deployment of humanitarian staff supporting its operations in Sudan.
In a statement issued, Thursday, the ICRC explained that Jeddah’s strategic location – approximately one hour’s flight from Port Sudan – provides an efficient field operations hub, granting it greater flexibility in deploying its staff within and outside Sudan with unprecedented speed.
The ICRC affirmed that this step will contribute to strengthening humanitarian operations and responding more effectively to the urgent needs of the population affected by the conflict.
The statement quoted Patrick Youssef, the ICRC’s Regional Director for Africa, as saying that given the immense humanitarian needs in Sudan, every day counts. He stressed that operating flight from Jeddah enhances ICRC ability to rapidly deploy field teams and maintain a sustained presence close to affected communities to provide essential protection and assistance.
He also expressed his gratitude to the authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Sudan for facilitating this procedure, which supports a rapid and efficient response.
It is worth noting that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been working in Sudan since 1978, collaborating closely with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society to protect those affected by the conflict. Its programs include supporting health services, maintaining water infrastructure, restoring family links, and promoting respect for international humanitarian law.
