Undersecretary of Information: War Has Imposed a New Reality Requiring Strengthening Professional Journalism and Combating Misinformation

The Sudanese Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information, r Sumaya Al-Hadi, has underlined that the war in Sudan has imposed new realities on the media landscape, requiring the strengthening of professional and responsible journalism and empowering journalists with verification tools to counter misinformation and protect society.
Al-Hadi spoke on Monday at the opening of the workshop “Strengthening Professional Journalism , Safy, and Countering disinformation in Sudan,” organized by the Ministry in cooperation with the UNESCO office in Sudan and continuing until September 3rd of September 2026. She emphasized that the war has presented significant challenges to journalistic work and has amplified the journalist’s responsibility to distinguish between accurate information and misleading news.
The Undersecretary emphasized that digital transformation has created new responsibilities and challenges for journalists, stressing that combating misinformation is not achieved through censorship, but rather through a strong, professional media and journalists equipped with the necessary skills and tools for digital verification.

She explained that the workshop aims to build the capacity of Sudanese journalists in detecting, verifying, and combating misinformation, particularly in conflict zones. It also focuses on enhancing physical safety and digital security, and developing skills in conducting interviews and engaging with sources and communities affected by war.
The workshop also addresses strengthening ethical and professional journalistic standards in conflict environments, gender-sensitive and trauma-sensitive reporting, and exploring sustainable funding models for media institutions to ensure their continuity and enhance their ability to fulfill their mission.
Sumaya Al-Hadi called on journalists to strengthen their commitment to professional ethics and standards, emphasizing that professional media is a fundamental pillar for developing journalistic work and restoring and strengthening trust and credibility.
The Undersecretary of Information expressed her gratitude to UNESCO and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for their support, stressing that the Ministry of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism welcomes all initiatives and partnerships that contribute to the development of Sudanese media, building the capacities of journalists, and enhancing professionalism and credibility.
