Exchange Begins for Two Sudanese Currency Denominations in Three States
Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza
The process of exchanging Sudanese currency in the 500 and 1000 denominations began today (Wednesday) in three states: Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and White Nile, and will continue for one month.
Yesterday (Tuesday), the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Dr. Sami Abdelhafiz, described the currency exchange process—set to begin today—in a joint meeting with the Governor of Khartoum as a replacement mechanism aimed at channeling money into bank accounts rather than a direct currency swap. He explained that this step comes in implementation of the state’s direction toward digital transformation in managing banking operations.
The Deputy Governor also pointed to directives issued by the Central Bank of Sudan to all banks to facilitate the procedures for opening bank accounts and depositing cash for citizens.
For its part, Khartoum State expressed its readiness to begin the currency exchange. Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza announced that banks and service centers would be secured by security and police forces to prevent any negative practices that could disrupt the process, protect citizens’ rights, and ensure they receive banking services easily and safely.
In a related context, former Assistant Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Abdullah Al-Hassan, called for improving the management of the national currency to end the effects of exchange rate deterioration on paper currency denominations.
He told “Sudanhorizon” that the largest denomination currently is 2,000 pounds, which is equivalent to about half a US dollar, and that there is no use of any coin denominations. This, he said, requires redefining both paper and coin currency denominations after removing a number of zeros from the current Sudanese currency to facilitate transactions and rationalize foreign currency spending on printing.
