Darfur Diaspora Association Group: Redress for Victims Is a Key Step Toward Peace

A delegation from the Darfur Diaspora Association Group in the United Kingdom attended on Tuesday a session held by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to consider the issue of reparations and compensation for victims of Ali Kushayb, reaffirming the group’s commitment to supporting victims and backing efforts toward justice and accountability in Sudan.

The delegation included Engineer Abdullah Abu Garda, Chairman of the group, and Mr. Najm al-Din Abdullah, Chairman of its Legal Committee.

The delegation followed the proceedings of the session, during which Trial Chamber I heard submissions from representatives of the victims, the prosecution, the defense, and the Trust Fund for Victims concerning the principles and mechanisms related to reparations and compensation for those affected.

The session comes at an important stage in the international justice process, as victims were given the opportunity to formally submit their claims, with judges expected to issue a final decision on the amount of compensation at a later stage.

The Darfur Diaspora Association Group stressed that reparations are not limited to financial compensation, but also include acknowledging the suffering of victims, restoring their dignity, and providing support to help address the humanitarian, social, and psychological consequences left by the crimes and violations committed.

The group also renewed its full support for victims’ rights to justice, accountability, and reparations, stressing that ensuring justice for victims represents a fundamental step toward achieving lasting peace and preventing impunity.
