In its 1235th meeting, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in Sudan, urging immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis and renew efforts for a comprehensive peaceful solution.

According to a statement issued by the Union, the meeting, held in Addis Ababa, discussed the results of the field mission to Egypt and Sudan conducted by a delegation of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council from October 1 to 4, 2024.

In its statement, the Peace and Security Council strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Sudan, particularly in Darfur, where the conflict has caused widespread destruction, forced displacement, and harsh humanitarian conditions.

The council condemned acts such as sexual and gender-based violence, including rape as a weapon of war and attacks on civilians, hospitals, and schools. It called for an immediate cessation of all hostilities.

The African Union emphasised the need for safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid, particularly in war-torn Darfur. The council welcomed Sudan’s decision to open the Adré border crossing from Chad to North Darfur, which will facilitate humanitarian assistance. It also called for establishing additional humanitarian corridors, urging international partners to accelerate their financial commitments and intensify aid efforts.

The Peace and Security Council reiterated its commitment to facilitating an inclusive political dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders, considering it the only viable path to a sustainable solution. The African Union stressed that the solution must be Sudanese-led. It urged the international community to coordinate efforts under the leadership of the AU to prevent external interference that could prolong the conflict.

The council welcomed discussions with Sudanese authorities on proposals to end the war and establish a civilian-led government. It also noted the upcoming meeting of the AU’s dedicated Presidential Committee on Sudan, scheduled for October 23, 2024, in Entebbe, Uganda, which will enhance the African Union’s mediation efforts in the crisis.

The meeting highlighted fruitful discussions with the Arab League and the Egyptian government during the mission. The council praised signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the African Union and Egypt’s Peacekeeping Training Centre as a step towards strengthening the AU’s capacity to support peace efforts across the continent.

The Peace and Security Council concluded by expressing its appreciation to the Sudanese authorities, particularly General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, for facilitating the mission and their generous hospitality during the council’s stay in Port Sudan. The council reaffirmed its commitment to actively resolve the crisis and work towards a peaceful and stable Sudan.
