Sudanese Central Bank: Completed a Strategic Upgrade to the Basic Banking Transfers Platform (BBAN)

The Central Bank of Sudan (CBS), through its technical arm, Electronic Banking Services Company (EBS), announced the completion of a strategic and comprehensive upgrade to its platform for interbank transfers using the Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN). This upgrade is part of the ongoing program to develop the national digital payments infrastructure and enhance system readiness to keep pace with the rapid growth in digital financial services.
The BBAN platform is the only national platform that enables interbank financial transfers in Sudan. It currently connects 26 banks through a central infrastructure that provides a reliable and secure operating environment for exchanging electronic transfers, making it a vital component of the national payments system.
EBS General Manager, Saif Al-Din Hassan Ahmed Bari, told Sudanhorizon that the development included updating the platform’s technical infrastructure and migrating to a more advanced operating environment. This enhanced operational resilience, scalability, high availability, and business continuity ensure the platform can accommodate the continuous growth in transaction volumes while maintaining high levels of performance and stability.
He added that the upgrades included updating the cybersecurity system, enhancing data protection mechanisms, and securing communications between banking systems. This was coupled with improved transaction processing efficiency and reduced response times, thereby increasing service reliability, mitigating operational risks, and ensuring the continued efficient delivery of services even during peak periods.
Saif Bari emphasized that the importance of this upgrade extends beyond simply improving current performance. It establishes a more flexible and scalable infrastructure, supporting future integration with digital financial solutions and FinTech technologies. This strengthens the banking sector’s ability to keep pace with the rapid advancements in the payments industry.
This achievement comes amidst the service’s continued growth. The total number of transactions executed through the BBAN platform during 2025 – 2026 exceeded 234 million, reflecting the increased reliance on the platform and banks’ confidence in its operational efficiency and reliability.
The General Manager of Electronic Banking Services (EBS) affirmed its commitment to developing the payments infrastructure and adopting the latest global technologies and practices, which enhances the reliability of digital banking services and consolidates the platform’s position as a key pillar for financial transfers between banks in Sudan.
