A high-ranking government source revealed to the news site “Sudanhorizon” that Sudan’s Attorney General and Chairman of the National Committee on the Violations of the Rapid Support Forces Rebels, Mawlana Tayfour Omar, will arrive in Geneva within the next two days and head the National Committee’s delegation.
The source added that Sudan’s Attorney General will attend a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on September 10.
The source also stated that the Human Rights Council would listen, during its meeting, to the report of the Fact-Finding Mission on the violations of the war in Sudan. According to some media outlets, the report recommended the deployment of a UN force to protect civilians.
The source further mentioned that the Attorney General, as the head of the National Committee investigating the crimes of the Rapid Support Forces rebels, will respond to the UN mission’s report with detailed facts during the upcoming meeting through a comprehensive report prepared by the National Committee.
According to what has been reported by some media outlets, the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan recommended an arms embargo and the deployment of a peacekeeping force to protect civilians. The report noted that the war had displaced around 10 million people, either internally displaced or refugees in neighbouring countries, due to the conflict in Sudan.
The committee stated in its report, as reported, that the warring parties in Sudan committed violations that could amount to crimes against humanity. The mission recommended the deployment of a neutral force to protect civilians in Sudan and called on the warring parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and allow the unhindered delivery of aid across the country.
