Arab League Council Meetings Kick Off, as Sudan’s Foreign Minister Embarks on Intensive Diplomatic Activity

The meetings of the Council of the Arab League at the level of foreign ministers will begin at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo today (Tuesday), in its (162) session, and the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Ambassador Hussein Awad, will head the Sudanese delegation participating in the meetings.

According to a press statement issued by the office of the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Hussein Awad met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on Tuesday morning at the League’s buildings in Cairo, before the start of the meetings. During the meeting, the Minister appreciated the strong relations between the Government of Sudan and the General Secretariat of the Arab League, and the efforts of the Secretary-General and his supportive positions to resolve and address Sudan’s core issues, especially during the current crisis the country is going through.

The meeting also discussed the frameworks and issues of joint Arab action, and the role of the League in preserving Arab unity and defending the issues of the Arab nation, including Sudan.

During the meeting, according to the Ministry’s statement, the importance of coordination with the League was emphasized to preserve the unity of the Arab ranks.

In a related context, the Sudanese Foreign Minister met with his counterparts from Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, and the Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs at the league buildings to strengthen coordination of joint Arab action.

The Foreign Minister had discussed with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel Aati in Cairo the developments in the situation in Sudan on Monday. A statement by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, seen by the Sudanhorizon news website, said: “During the meeting, the Minister informed his Egyptian counterpart about the developments in the situation in Sudan, the opening of crossings and facilitating the delivery of aid to those in need, and the state’s efforts to restore stability in Sudan.”

He continued: “While the Egyptian Foreign Minister explained his country’s efforts with brothers and allies to achieve peace and stability in Sudan and end the war that has been going on there for nearly a year and a half.” The meeting, according to the statement, addressed the need to coordinate efforts and support joint Arab action through the Arab League, and the need for the League to highlight supportive positions for the Sudanese government through its movements and statements issued by its summits and regular meetings, in solidarity with Sudan, which seeks to defend its legitimate rights, safety and territorial integrity.
