The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has strongly condemned the attack on one of its trucks near the town of Hamrat Al-Sheikh in North Kordofan, stating that the vehicle “was part of a larger convoy of 39 trucks travelling with vital food assistance to support hungry families who fled to Tawila, North Darfur, in search of food and safety.”
In a statement issued late on Friday, the programme said that the truck “had stopped for repairs due to a mechanical failure when it came under attack, resulting in the destruction of the truck’s cabin and serious injuries to the driver, who was immediately transported to hospital for urgent medical treatment.” The WFP called for “an immediate and independent investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.”
The statement added that the convoy had already travelled more than half of its 1,000-kilometre route when the incident occurred. All parties to the conflict had granted permission for the use of this route. The road is considered the WFP’s main lifeline to reach the most vulnerable populations in Darfur, with nearly 100 relief trucks using the same corridors each month to deliver essential food assistance.
The statement noted that “this latest incident is the sixth serious attack on WFP trucks, property, and facilities in Sudan over the past year, resulting in the deaths of eight humanitarian workers and partners, and injuring many more.”
It stressed that “this is unacceptable” and that “humanitarian personnel and their assets must never be targeted.”
