Sudanese Army Is A Red Line!!!

Dr Abdel Azim Awad

When a person who claims Sudanese nationality openly insults the Sudanese army to the degree that Walid Musa Madbou did yesterday on Al Jazeera, remaining silent in the face of that insult becomes an inexcusable negligence. The man plainly said that “the Sudanese army is an ideological and ethnic militia” — thus, he described the Sudanese Armed Forces with those labels without batting an eyelid.

The programme’s host did not object or intervene to put the record straight, thereby exposing his channel itself to a breach of professional standards, given its legal and ethical responsibility for what is broadcast on its screen about the army of one of the largest militaries in the region — and the army of a sister state to the country that owns the channel. Everyone knows the regard in which Qatar is held by the

Sudanese people, who have great respect for the special bilateral relationship with it, for its brotherly people and for its wise leadership.
On the Sudanese side, we would expect legal proceedings to be initiated against the citizen Walid Madbou, leading to his prosecution under the Penal Code and the National Security Act. We would also expect the Ministry of Information to call the attention of the channel “Al Jazeera Mubasher” to such transgressions, which could have harmful consequences for the distinguished relations between Khartoum and Doha.

If we put aside many of the slips that harm Sudan’s position during the current wartime circumstances on some of this channel’s programmes — especially those hosted by presenter Ahmed Taha, who adopts the tone of a criminal investigator and departs entirely from recognised standards of professional media dialogue — we cannot tolerate crossing the red lines that involve insulting the Sudanese Armed Forces, the shield of this steadfast homeland.
