IGAD Executive Secretary Calls for Sudanese-Owned Peace Process

Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Workneh Gebeyehu said Sudan has now topped global humanitarian emergency indicators, recording the highest number of people in need of humanitarian assistance worldwide, at 33.7 million, while facing the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis, all within three years of war.

In his address to the high-level ministerial meeting, he said the looming El Niño phenomenon could further exacerbate the crisis through additional floods and droughts, alongside the continuation of the war.

Speaking at the meeting convened by France and its partners, Gebeyehu called on all international stakeholders to place the Sudanese people at the center of all efforts, support de-escalation of the conflict, and unite behind a single peace process led by Sudanese people and under full Sudanese ownership.
