UN Secretary-General: Countries Fueling Sudan War with Arms Must Be Held Accountable

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for accountability for countries that fuel the war in Sudan through supplying weapons.
This comes as the Sudanese government continues to raise the issue of foreign military support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) before international bodies.
Speaking ahead of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York, Guterres stated that the war in Sudan is receiving support from foreign countries. He emphasized the necessity of holding accountable those countries that supply weapons used extensively to attack civilians.
The Secretary-General noted that reports by UN Security Council experts have addressed the issue of foreign interference in the conflict. He described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as “devastating,” asserting that the level of suffering endured by the Sudanese people is unacceptable.
Guterres’s statement takes on added significance as the General Assembly meetings approach, shifting the discourse from merely demanding an end to foreign support to explicitly discussing accountability for nations that contribute to the flow of arms and the prolongation of the war.
The statement coincides with the Sudanese government’s submission of complaints and documentation to the UN Security Council and the United Nations proving that the RSF has received foreign military support. Meanwhile, subsequent UN and international investigations have uncovered external networks involved in providing the militia with weapons, logistical support, and mercenaries.
