The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia committed another massacre in North Kordofan State on Tuesday by shelling the courthouse in the city of Umm Ruwaba, killing 13 people and injuring 22 others, according to the Sudan Doctors Network.
In a statement, the network condemned the RSF’s deliberate targeting of civilian sites and facilities in Umm Ruwaba. It said the attack disregarded the principle of distinction between military and civilian targets, particularly as the shelling occurred during peak hours when the city was experiencing heavy civilian movement. The attack consequently killed and injured dozens of people, constituting a clear violation of international humanitarian law and the rules prohibiting attacks against civilians and civilian objects.
The Sudan Doctors Network called for an immediate halt to attacks on cities, residential neighborhoods, civilian sites, and facilities, and urged that civilians be spared the consequences of military operations. It also called for strict adherence to international humanitarian law and for ensuring the protection of civilians and preventing their lives from being placed at risk.
The network urged the international community to pressure the militia’s leadership and hold it fully accountable for the Umm Ruwaba massacre.
