Head of Abyei Oversight Committee: We Mourn the Victims of the Bombing, Call for the Removal of Militias and Mercenaries
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
Al-Khair Abu Maridat, the head of the Abyei Oversight Committee (representing Sudan), has expressed his deep regret and condemnation—in an exclusive statement on Saturday—regarding the drone attack that took place on October 19 in the Al-Na’am area, and that resulted in the deaths of several civilians. He offered his condolences for the victims families and beloved ones, wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The head of the Oversight Committee has further called on the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to conduct an urgent and transparent investigation to identify the party or parties responsible for this tragedy.
Abu Maridat further demanded the removal of all armed and military elements from the region, in compliance with international resolutions and the peace agreements signed between Sudan and South Sudan. He noted that leniency toward the presence of armed groups operating outside state authority—as well as mercenary factions vying for influence within or near the region—has created conditions that allowed such an incident to occur, and that this situation must be addressed with the utmost firmness.
