Sudan Reaffirms Desire to Strengthen Cooperation with Islamic Development Bank and Resume Financing

State Minister at Sudan’s Ministry of Finance, Mohamed Nour Al-Daim, held talks with the Islamic Development Bank Group on a number of issues of mutual interest, foremost among them ways to strengthen cooperation in priority areas, develop the longstanding and distinguished relations between Sudan and the group, and establish plans to further enhance them during the coming period.

The talks took place during his visit to Saudi Arabia, where he held an important meeting on Tuesday with the Executive Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank Group at the bank’s headquarters in Jeddah. The meeting was attended by a technical delegation from the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Sudan.

Nour Al-Daim affirmed Sudan’s desire to strengthen its relations with the bank group and work toward addressing its outstanding obligations and arrears, paving the way for the resumption of financing and access to the services provided by the bank. He said support would be directed toward reconstruction projects, infrastructure, and priority development initiatives.

The State Minister praised the longstanding cooperation between the two sides and the role played by the group in supporting and financing a number of major development projects in Sudan. He stressed the importance of continuing this partnership in a manner that supports the country’s development, economic recovery, and reconstruction efforts.

He also expressed his appreciation to the group for the support it has provided, stressing the importance of maintaining and strengthening programs and projects aimed at addressing Sudan’s economic and development challenges.

For his part, the Executive Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank Group praised the distinguished relations between Sudan and the group, as well as Sudan’s historic position as one of the bank’s founding member states. He stressed the importance of continuing joint cooperation and making greater use of the group’s capabilities and programs to support development in member countries.

The two sides agreed on a number of practical steps to activate and strengthen cooperation during the coming period and make greater use of the group’s services and programs, particularly in financing development projects, supporting the private sector, strengthening programs targeting poor and low-income groups, and implementing capacity-building initiatives.

Both sides emphasized the importance of continued coordination among the relevant authorities and follow-up on the issues under discussion, with the aim of translating the understandings reached into projects and programs that support Sudan’s recovery, reconstruction, and development efforts.

The State Minister heads a Sudanese delegation comprising representatives of the relevant authorities from the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Sudan. The delegation is conducting intensive talks with the Islamic Development Bank Group on settling outstanding arrears and resuming banking services and anticipated financing for Sudan.
