Thirty buses departed on Thursday from three Egyptian cities – Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan – towards Sudan, in one of the largest overland repatriation trips organized by the “Hope Committee for Voluntary Return.” The buses carried 870 people, including Sudanese university students and professors.
Professor Maher Al-Zein Ahmed, head of the transportation committee for the Hope Committee, stated in a press conference at the bus departure point in the Abdeen district of central Cairo that the return of these groups represents an important step towards ensuring their participation in the new academic year. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the procedures implemented to facilitate the voluntary return process.
Maher confirmed that arrangements are underway to expand partnerships with business leaders, institutions, government bodies, and various humanitarian organizations to contribute to the repatriation efforts. He noted the increasing number of Sudanese from across Egypt’s governorates and emphasized the committee’s commitment to prioritizing repatriation to depopulated areas in various Sudanese cities to revitalize those regions.
The head of the Transportation Committee commended the Sudanese government’s initiative in providing services and facilitating border crossings for returnees, acknowledging their economic and social circumstances. He added that returning home plays a significant role in reuniting families and alleviating the financial burdens on returnees.
For his part, Hassan Khalid, the rapporteur of the Voluntary Repatriation Committee, revealed that since its inception, the committee has facilitated the repatriation of approximately 50,000 Sudanese, with registration rates continuing to rise. He stated that the return of Sudanese citizens is contingent upon the reconstruction of essential public infrastructure, such as electricity and water services.
The committee rapporteur reiterated its appreciation for the coordination and facilities provided by the relevant authorities in the Egyptian government to facilitate the migration process, and warned travelers of the need to avoid carrying “excess luggage,” saying that this represents a major obstacle, and calling on travelers to adhere to the specified weight limits for luggage.
