Refugee Commissioner Urges Protection for Asylum Seekers After Sudan–Ethiopia Border Clashes

Sudan’s Commission for Refugees has expressed its deep concern over the recent fighting along the Sudan–Ethiopia border, where clashes erupted on Friday, July 31, 2026, between forces of the Tigray Front and the Ethiopian army.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Refugees said the fighting resulted in projectiles landing inside refugee camps, causing a number of deaths and injuries.

The statement noted that the Sudan–Ethiopia border region serves as a key transit and reception area for asylum seekers fleeing Ethiopia, warning that the continued military build-up is likely to trigger additional refugee arrivals while increasing both security and humanitarian risks.

The Commission appealed to the international and regional community, as well as the United Nations, to fulfill their humanitarian and moral responsibilities by supporting efforts to preserve peace and security in the region and ensure the protection of refugees.

It also called for the urgent provision of humanitarian assistance to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

The Commissioner for Refugees affirmed that the Commission continues to coordinate closely with all relevant partners to monitor developments affecting refugees and asylum seekers, while working to meet their humanitarian needs and assess their overall welfare.
