Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

The National Electrotechnical Committee at the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its nationwide public awareness campaign on electrical safety under the slogan “Combating Illegal Electricity Connections.” The initiative aims to raise public awareness of the dangers posed by unauthorized electrical connections and to protect citizens and their property as Sudan advances through the reconstruction and rebuilding phase.

Dr. Omar Abdullah, Chairman of the National Electrotechnical Committee, stressed that compliance with technical standards and approved specifications represents the first line of defense for safeguarding both infrastructure and human lives. He called on citizens to embrace a spirit of shared responsibility and cooperate with the committee’s efforts to eliminate unsafe practices, emphasizing that protecting the national power grid from waste and damage is a national duty requiring the collective efforts of all to ensure the safety and stability of electricity supply across the country.

The ongoing campaign highlights the serious safety and health risks associated with illegal electricity connections. These include fatal electrocution incidents, fires caused by exposed wiring, and the risk of transformer explosions resulting from excessive electrical loads. The phenomenon also has severe economic consequences through electricity theft, leading to significant financial losses and a decline in service quality. In addition, illegal electricity connections carry strict legal penalties under national legislation, including substantial fines, imprisonment, and the permanent disconnection of electricity services.

Through the various components of its campaign, the committee continues to warn of the destructive technical impact of unauthorized connections on the national grid and voltage stability. It renewed its call for citizens to comply immediately with approved technical standards to protect lives and support sustainable development.
