Archaeological Excavations Launched at the Palace Museum in Dongola

Archaeological excavations began today at the Palace Museum in Dongola, under the supervision of a specialist from the Northern State’s Supreme Council for Tourism and the Restoration Department of the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums.

The team began dividing the southern section of the museum into squares according to scientific methodology, in preparation for excavating and uncovering buried artifacts. It is expected that archaeological features such as rooms and buildings attached to the museum will be revealed, in accordance with the restoration, maintenance, and excavation plan approved by the Secretary-General of the Northern State’s Supreme Council for Tourism, Dr. Abdul Rahman Ibrahim Saeed.

The Sudan News Agency quoted the Secretary-General of the Council as saying that the aim of the ongoing excavation work is to document the history of the building and rehabilitate the museum to become a tourist landmark within the plans of the Dongola Tourism Capital project for this year.

He pointed out that the commencement of excavation and scientific work inside the museum is a new step towards reviving one of the most important historical landmarks of the Northern State. He stressed the importance of adhering to scientific standards in excavation and restoration work to preserve its archaeological value.
