Government sources: Sudan Embassy in Addis Ababa Operates Normally
Sudanhorizon – Mariam Abashar
Reliable government sources confirmed to that the Sudanese Embassy in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, is fully operational, carrying out its duties with its diplomatic and administrative staff, under the supervision of the Chargé d’Affaires, the Deputy Ambassador.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Ambassador to Addis Ababa and its representative to the African Union, Al-Zein Ibrahim, remain in Sudan since his recall in early May for consultations.
Several international and regional relations experts interviewed by Sudanhorizon have called for the ambassador’s return to resume his duties at the embassy and the African Union.
They stated that his return is now essential, especially given Addis Ababa’s status as a regional and international hub, where Sudan needs to elevate its representation. They added that the political message behind the ambassador’s recall has been clearly received.
The Sudanese ambassador to Addis Ababa and its representative to the African Union returned to Sudan in the first week of May in response to a summons from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The summons was for consultations with the ministry’s leadership and relevant state agencies. The summons came in the wake of a statement issued by the ministry, protesting the launch of hostile acts against Sudanese civilian infrastructure, particularly Khartoum Airport, from Ethiopian territory.
These attacks, the statement claimed, were carried out by Emirati drones that originated from Bahr Dar Airport on the Sudanese-Ethiopian border.
The return of Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim coincided with media reports, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not confirm at the time, that Addis Ababa had withdrawn its acceptance of Sudan’s nomination of Ambassador Abdul Ghani Al-Naim, the current Sudanese ambassador to Senegal, to be its ambassador to Ethiopia. This withdrawal was reportedly a reaction to Sudan’s recall of its ambassador.
