Sudan: Working on Paying Back Debt Owed to Indian Companies

The Sudanese Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Al-Mutasim Ahmed Ibrahim, has stressed that his country is working to settle its due debts and obligations to Indian companies, most notably ONGC.
Speaking at India Energy Week 2026 in Goa, India, the Sudanese minister stated that debts should not hinder continued cooperation between the two sides.
He noted that one of the proposed mechanisms is granting the company new blocks to operate by revitalizing the joint team’s work.
Ibrahim emphasized that Sudan looks forward to strengthening cooperation with India to rebuild the energy sector after the extensive damage inflicted on oil infrastructure by the war waged by militias.
He added that his country seeks to deepen cooperation with India in the oil and energy sectors to rehabilitate damaged facilities and resume production. This came during his meeting with the Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on the sidelines of the conference.
Ibrahim described India as a “historical partner” of Sudan, affirming that cooperation between the two countries in the oil and energy sector extends back decades and continues even under the most difficult circumstances. He added, “There is a long-standing historical relationship between Sudan and India, particularly in the oil and energy sector, and this cooperation is progressing.”
Minister took part in the first day of the events in the Arab-Indian Dialogue, Presided over by the Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He detailed the challenges facing the oil sector in Sudan and the government’s strategy for addressing them, emphasizing that his country views India as a key partner in the coming phase, and that his participation in Energy Week reinforces this approach.
