Sudanese–Egyptian Talks on Rebuilding and Rehabilitating Power Grids in Sudan

Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Oil, Engineer Al-Mu‘tasim Ibrahim Ahmed, held discussions with Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, on strengthening cooperation in the fields of electricity and renewable energy, and on rebuilding and rehabilitating Sudan’s power grid infrastructure in a manner that serves the development goals of both brotherly countries. The talks also addressed taking practical steps to enhance economic integration and confront energy challenges.
The discussions, held in Cairo, included developing a technical “roadmap” for rebuilding and rehabilitating Sudan’s electricity networks, as well as mechanisms to secure power supply and provide electricity to residential, industrial, and agricultural sectors across the various states of Sudan.
The meeting also addressed ways to support and strengthen partnership and cooperation in electricity, renewable energy, training, and network rehabilitation. In addition, the two sides reviewed progress on completing the second phase of the double-circuit interconnection project “Toshka 2 – Wadi Halfa,” with a capacity of 300 megawatts.
The Sudanese Minister of Energy expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s supportive stance toward Sudan, expressing hope that this partnership would translate into tangible outcomes contributing to economic stability and meeting the energy needs of Sudanese citizens.
For his part, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, affirmed the depth of Sudanese–Egyptian relations and their historical strength, highlighting the long-standing ties between the two brotherly peoples. He reviewed Egypt’s capabilities in the electricity and renewable energy sectors, as well as its accumulated expertise in rehabilitation, construction, technology transfer, and training.
He reiterated Egypt’s readiness to cooperate in meeting Sudan’s energy sector needs, including the provision of electrical transformers of various capacities, mobile support units, and the expansion of solar energy projects. He also expressed full readiness to supply Sudan with transformers, mobile support units, and to cooperate in renewable energy technologies and expertise exchange, in order to ensure adequate electricity supply to many regions across the country.
