Meeting With the Deputy Minister of Agriculture:

On Friday, January 16, Ambassador Ilham met with Mr. Adam Nowak, Polish Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, at his office in the Polish capital.

The Sudan News Agency reported that the meeting addressed bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of agriculture and rural development, and prospects for its further development. The Ambassador raised several topics related to strengthening cooperation and creating the appropriate conditions for achieving this through activating the agreed-upon cooperation frameworks between the two sides, taking into account the vast potential in both countries and their desire to expand cooperation to broader horizons.

The Ambassador pointed to aspects related to enhancing cooperation in the field of agricultural research and localizing the production of improved seeds and agricultural inputs, including fertilizers and agricultural machinery, in addition to strengthening cooperation in the exchange of expertise and training.

The Ambassador also discussed the possibility of Polish investment and the development of food industries in production areas and rural regions of the states, which would contribute to boosting production, creating job opportunities, and reducing product waste due to marketing difficulties, especially since Sudan possesses significant agricultural and livestock potential and a long history of experience in dairy and meat production.

In this context, the Ambassador discussed strengthening cooperation with the Polish National Center for Agriculture, which is responsible for implementing rural development policy in Poland, especially since there is a readiness on the part of relevant authorities in both countries to benefit from what this institution offers to assist Sudan in the field of rural development.

For his part, the Polish Minister commended the proposal presented by the Ambassador, emphasizing the shared desire of both countries to cooperate in the agricultural sector. He announced the readiness of the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and its affiliated institutions for long-term cooperation, including collaboration in the exchange of expertise and agricultural research. He also noted the potential for cooperation through the Ministry’s specialized centers and institutes.

The Minister further expressed his Ministry’s willingness to provide training and encourage interested companies to invest in Sudan. He affirmed his country’s commitment to building institutions and fostering ongoing bilateral cooperation, and its desire to increase Polish agricultural and food exports, including milk and dairy products.

It is worth noting that agricultural cooperation between Sudan and Poland is formally structured through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two ministries and another Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Sudanese Agricultural Bank and Arsus Agricultural Machinery Company.

With the Deputy Foreign Minister:
During her meeting with the Polish Deputy Foreign Minister, Wojciech Zajkowski, at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw, the Ambassador briefed him on the developments in Sudan and the systematic violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, particularly in El Fasher. She noted the widespread regional and international condemnation of the militia and the international rejection of any parallel entities or governments within Sudan.

The Ambassador also reviewed the provisions of the Sudanese government’s peace initiative, noting that, following its presentation by Prime Minister Kamil al-Tayeb Idris to the Security Council last December, it was welcomed by the UN Secretary-General, the African Union, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Conference of the Great Lakes Region States, and numerous countries bilaterally.

The Ambassador emphasized the importance of continued positive engagement between Sudan and Poland and the activation of bilateral cooperation mechanisms. During the meeting, it was agreed to convene the third session of the Political Consultative Committee between the two countries’ foreign ministries, and consultations will take place between the two ministries to determine the date for the meeting in the near future. The Ambassador also addressed the longstanding cooperation between the two countries in the field of archaeology, which spans more than sixty years through the Polish archaeological mission, and the ongoing efforts to convene an international conference to assist Sudan in rebuilding museums and archaeological sites destroyed and looted by rebel militias. The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation in academic diplomatic training and coordinating between the two sides on issues related to migration and human trafficking.

For his part, Mr. Wojciech Zajkowski affirmed the Polish government’s firm position, based on the principles of the UN Charter, respect for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-recognition of any parallel entities.

He also welcomed the upcoming session of the Political Consultative Committee between the two countries’ foreign ministries and the commencement of the necessary arrangements for its convening, in coordination between the two sides. He further welcomed the strengthening of academic cooperation between Sudan and Poland.

Mr. Zajkowski also presented a detailed explanation of the challenges his country faces as a result of illegal immigration. He also addressed regional developments and their concerns regarding these developments.

It is worth noting that Sudan and Poland have memoranda of understanding and framework agreements for cooperation in several fields, and both sides are working to strengthen and activate this cooperation to the benefit of both countries, which share historical ties.
