Energy Minister: Rebuilding the Electricity Sector Is a National Battle Requiring Collective Efforts

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

Sudan’s Minister of Energy, Eng. Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed, said rebuilding and rehabilitating the country’s electricity sector is a major national undertaking that requires the combined efforts of all stakeholders.
Speaking at the “Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Thermal Power Generation” workshop held on Wednesday under the theme “An Important Step Toward Sustainable Electricity Supply,” the minister said the Ministry is implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction program as part of the Government of Hope initiative. The program aims to create conditions conducive to the voluntary return of citizens and the restoration of essential public services.
The minister said the electricity sector had suffered systematic destruction that disrupted daily life, public services, and displaced citizens, estimating total losses in the sector at approximately US$9 billion.
He stressed that electricity is a fundamental pillar supporting the country’s economic, productive, and service sectors, affirming that efforts are continuing to secure the financial resources needed to rebuild the sector.
The minister also emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of thermal power plants—particularly the Umm Dabakir and Qurei power stations—in supporting the national grid. He called for comprehensive economic feasibility studies to increase power generation while reducing operating costs and urged distribution-sector employees to intensify efforts to improve electricity services for citizens.
For his part, Eng. Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Al-Rajil, Acting Director of the Sudan Electricity Holding Company, said maintenance and rehabilitation work represents the first step toward stabilizing electricity supply. He noted that the generation, transmission, and distribution sectors form an integrated system, with improvements in each directly contributing to reliable electricity services for the country’s economic and public service sectors.
Meanwhile, Eng. Dr. Mudawi Abdel Karim, Director of the Thermal and Hydroelectric Generation Company, underscored the importance of scientific planning in the reconstruction process and developing a long-term vision for the electricity sector.
He pointed to the extensive damage suffered by power generation facilities, with several plants having been taken out of service. He also stressed the need to draw on international reconstruction experiences and make effective use of available financial resources to restore and improve electricity services.
Dr. Abdel Karim added that the workshop comes at an exceptional time that requires unified efforts and close cooperation to ensure the success of Sudan’s reconstruction process.
