Afwerki: UAE the Main Destabilizing Force in Sudan

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has affirmed that the solution to the Sudanese crisis lies in supporting the Transitional Sovereign Council to pave the way for peace and civilian rule. He described the Council as a temporary body with a legitimate mandate, while simultaneously rejecting the characterization of the situation in the country as a “civil war” or a conflict between two generals.

In an interview with local media, published by the Eritrean Ministry of Information on Tuesday, Afwerki explained that the current situation in Sudan must be understood within its historical context. He pointed out that the National Congress Party caused serious crises for thirty years until it was overthrown by the people in a popular uprising. The army then assumed responsibility as a guardian, followed by the transition through the Sovereign Council.

The Eritrean president revealed that his country presented a document to the Transitional Council in 2022 outlining a three-year plan for the transfer of power, but that foreign interference obstructed this process. Afwerki launched a scathing attack on external parties he accused of seeking to destabilize the region, asserting that the United Arab Emirates was the primary destabilizing force in Sudan.

He criticized the multitudes of international initiatives and what he termed the unrealistic slogans issued by the Security Council and the Quartet, arguing that they contribute to prolonging the crisis.

He called on Egypt and neighboring countries to play a constructive role in supporting the vision for achieving lasting stability.

Afwerki stressed the necessity of protecting the current transitional institutions, considering them the only temporary bridge capable of guiding Sudan towards stability, free from harmful regional interference.
